A Green Future,
Carried Forward by Verdy
Environmental impact and climate change have become global challenges in recent years.
Against this backdrop, Tokyo Verdy, a club based in Tokyo, the capital of Japan, and bearing the Portuguese word for “green” in its name, recognizes its responsibility to lead sustainable economic and social activities that take the global environment into consideration—not only within the sports industry, but also across Japan, Asia, and the wider world.
Also, as one of the clubs that has placed the greatest and longest-standing emphasis on youth development in Japanese football, we believe it is our mission to create an environment where all children who will shape the next generation can enjoy sport both now and in the future, while also raising their awareness of the importance of environmental protection and passing that awareness on to the future.
As Japan’s oldest professional football club, Tokyo Verdy has always valued its connections with a wide range of stakeholders, including partner companies, local governments, fans and supporters. We believe that initiatives carried out together with the people and organizations with whom we have built close relationships have the power to create significant impact—not only in Tokyo, but throughout Japan and around the world. With this belief, we have launched a new sustainability action.

Background to the Initiative

PIONEER
spirit
Founded in 1969 as Japan’s first “club team” with a professional vision, at a time when the country’s top league was still largely amateur.

prestige
1993: Inaugural J.League annual champions
1994: Back-to-back J.League champions
1992–94: Three consecutive J.League Cup (Nabisco Cup) titles

frustration and
demotion
At the same time, the Club experienced multiple ownership changes and financial crises. In 2005, the men’s first team was relegated to J2 for the first time. Although it returned to J1 once, it was relegated again in 2008 and went on to compete in J2 for the next 15 years.

re√i√al
During a period of ups and downs in both management and sporting results, the Club was sustained by its youth development and Beleza.

academy
Long before the J.League was launched with an emphasis on academy development, the Club was already investing in youth development. Known for the development strength of Verdy and Beleza, it has produced many professional players and Japan national team players.

beleza
Beleza won the pre-professional league 17 times and the Empress’s Cup 16 times. In particular, the team achieved four consecutive league titles from 1990 to 1993, four more from 2005 to 2008, and five consecutive titles from 2015 to 2019.

New Structure
At the end of 2020, the Club entered a new management structure. The key theme was to create a new Verdy that surpasses the glory of “those days.”

ALL √ERDY
IN TOKYO
As a multi-sport club, the Club operates teams across multiple sports beyond football, contributing to the wider promotion and development of sport as a whole.

Time to go J1
In 2023, the men’s first team returned to J1 for the first time in 16 years. In its first season back in 2024, the team made a strong leap forward, finishing sixth in J1.

About
About the Initiative

Five Initiative Themes
Tokyo Verdy will promote TOKYO♡GREEN as a sustainability action designed to pass on a sustainable global environment and society to future generations.
With “green,” the symbol of the Club, at the heart of this concept, we will work to conserve the natural environment that is being lost, reduce the environmental impact of our business activities, and expand new greenery in urban areas through initiatives such as tree planting and greening activities.
As a club that has long emphasized youth development in Japanese football, we will also strengthen educational and awareness programs that communicate the importance of environmental conservation to the children who will lead the next generation and help them develop the ability to think and act independently.
In addition, as a club that has developed diverse sporting activities, including women’s football and multi-sport initiatives, we will position these efforts as broader SDGs actions that go beyond the environmental and climate fields. Through them, we aim to contribute to the realization of an inclusive, well-being-oriented society where diversity is respected and everyone can live in good physical and mental health.
Tokyo Verdy aims to be a club that continues to create meaningful value for people, communities, and the future of society through the power of sport. With TOKYO♡GREEN as our symbolic banner, we will continue taking on the challenge of realizing a sustainable future while fulfilling our responsibilities to both the environment and society.

Examples of Environmental Impact Caused by Tokyo Verdy
Through match operations and daily training, Tokyo Verdy generates environmental impacts such as large-scale energy consumption, waste generation, and GHG emissions from travel across Japan, which arise from the home-and-away nature of professional football. These impacts are created not only by our players and staff, but also through the behavior of tens of thousands of fans and supporters whom the Club influences.
We recognize that implementing activities to reduce environmental impact, and using our social influence to encourage shifts in public awareness, are part of our social responsibility.

reportS
We have compiled the activities and results promoted to date in our Sustainability Report. In addition, we have formally set out the Club’s basic approach to sustainability in our ESG Policy, and established a Fan Policy as a set of behavioral guidelines for which we ask the understanding and cooperation of our fans and supporters.
Acti√ities
Tokyo Verdy promotes environmentally conscious initiatives based on the concept of the Sports Positive League (SPL), which is promoted by the J.League.
Under TOKYO♡GREEN, the Club has established the Five Initiative Themes. For specific initiatives related to the environment and climate, we organize them in line with the 12 themes defined by the SPL so that the content and positioning of each case can be communicated more clearly.
For details on the SPL, please refer to the official J.League website.
